Prophet and Loss (1988)

Grad film

Directed by Jonathan Bairstow

Synopsis
A section of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice focusing on Orpheus’ breathless attempt to locate and rescue the love of his life Eurydice from the Underworld, reworked at hard hitting and frenetic pace.
Director's Statement
The animation was drawn in pencil, traced in ink and shot in single frames onto 35mm film. The sound was written, mixed and post synched picture digitally. The film was completed as a combined 35mm print in Spring 1988.

The idea behind the film was to wave a classical and universally tragic storyline into a futuristic frenetic and rhythm based cartoon world of spatial and gravitational contradictions. The intention of the visual design was to highlight the difficulty of comprehending the underworld ( a world inhabited by the souls of the dead). To gain access to it and rescue his lost soul mate our thwarted hero has to negotiate with the all powerful God Apollo.
