Face Facts (1990)

Grad film

Directed by Linda Hughes

Synopsis
An award-winning satirical view of the multi-national standardised beauty industry and its effects on people’s lives, both here and in the wide world..
Director's Statement
In a simple, loose style this drawn animation takes you from the personal to the global, revealing, satirically, the effect the multi-national cosmetics industry has on all of us.

I chose cosmetics because how we look is such a sensitive area, and the ideal forum for the narrator’s crassness to be revealed. He pretends to care about people with large birthmarks, or big noses, giving the business of selling cosmetics some moral weight. He isn't selling make-up, he's selling happiness. His true intent is revealed with, 'You aren't beautiful, but we can improve you, all it takes is time, money and pain'.

From personal insecurities, via mudpacks and plastic surgery, the Fascistic narrator moves on to the world stage, obliterating women everywhere, replacing them with Identikit blondes, triumphantly crying “together we’ll make the whole world beautiful”.
