Selkie Dancing (1995)

Grad film

Directed by Rachel Bevan Baker

Synopsis
As the seal calls to her sisters, so the myth calls to us.
Director's Statement
I am interested in myths and their universality - Selkie tales exist worldwide. I wanted to explore the symbolism of selkies or SEALPEOPLE, who can take off their sealskins to take human form, thus inhabiting 2 worlds/states. Underwater = secret, private (in dreams water symbolises subconscious). Land = public, open expression,
our conscious state. Like an idea moving from our subconscious to our conscious, the selkies leave their sealskins and proceed to dance on a beach in view of the world, which, like any act of expression, carries inherent risks. Technique: 16mm film. Mixed
media, 2D animation with 1 min of colour reversal in middle, of glowing painted dancers against black. Soundtrack has specially arranged music, based on two traditional selkie songs.
