Director's Statement
The idea for this film came from simply asking people if they would rather be male of female. As a starting point this then led to quite lengthy interviews around gender. A particular group of people that I talked to interested me most: 50+, all Northern working class. They seemed to have led traditional lives in the sense of gender roles, yet they were very aware of the changed world that their children now work in, yet they were also very confused and unsure of peoples’ role in society today and if they actually preferred it. I wanted to treat this as a sort of documentary but I felt what was said was more important than totally characterising each person. I wanted to underline the confusion of the voices so decided to use only two characters who were ambiguous in appearance and would act in parallel to what the voices were saying. I think the film is ok. Most of all I gained an interest in interviewing people for topics for films. I think this lends another side of humanity and honesty which can work well with the exaggerated work of animation.
