Ad Hoc 0-1072 (1999)
1st Year
Directed by Caroline Wegener
Synopsis
‘Ad hoc’ (lit.) means something that happens spontaneously, or something that is developing, ‘coming out’ in that very moment. I needed 1072 pages.
Director's Statement
... There are a few black lines on a lot of white space. It starts with white space and ends with white space and all in the middle is happening spontaneously, apart from the man (Herr Popp) and his dog walking. Popp is not noticing that his dog is constantly being eaten by a bigger dog; by a bigger dog; by a bigger dog. He is never looking back while one dog is trying to escape the larger dog running after him. At the beginning, before I started drawing, I had the idea that the dog which is following the dog that follows the man, is getting larger, so that the dog is then later bigger than the man himself: a play with the scale. But obviously, when I was drawing, the followed dogs tried to escape all the time. It was my intention to not aim for a punch line, and it was not meant to make a huge amount of sense..... The noises in the film are all recorded in the cutting room with the Nagra (only the wind is from a CD, emphasising the vast, wide and open space). I wanted them as ‘low tech’ as the way the characters/objects move/walk in the film to the match the whole atmosphere.
