12 Sketches on the Impossibility of Being Still (2010)
Grad film
Directed by Magali Charrier
Synopsis
12 Sketches on the Impossibility of Being Still is a collection of experiments in animation and editing exploring the spaces where nothing happens: the liminal zone that exists between you and me, between here and there, sound and silence, movement and stillness.
Director's Statement
I find forms and ideas in the doing, in the joyous energy of not planning, of throwing myself into the work. I am more and more interested in the unfinished, the provisional, the raw; in resisting the delimitation between the provisional and the definitive, between living thought and finished item. I like to leave things endlessly open, as sketches or starting points. The desire to make a piece of work often comes from a specific mental state I want to evoke--here, a sense of stillness, suspension, of being in-between, not quite here or there, now or then... From then, images begin to form, as well as ideas for experiments. I make a lot of drawings, to clarify my visions and thoughts. Then I work with performers, using movement to shape these images in space. The final work consists of playing with the photographed and printed shapes of the performers. I intervene, I trace lines, erase parts, cut things out, glue things on... I create a world in which drawn shapes and textures flirt with the moving bodies.
