The Thing Under the Tree (2013)

Grad film

Directed by Lillian (Lily) Fang

Synopsis
Gabby keeps bothering her older sister Tam to play, so Tam tells a story about a monster that lives in the forest. Whatever you do, you can’t let it see your face. But then her phone rings, leaving the story unfinished—so Gabby goes off to find the creature herself.
Director's Statement

The Thing Under the Tree explores that bittersweet stage of childhood when your older siblings or friends seem to have outgrown you, and no one wants to play the games they used to love. Through the poetic imagery of childhood make believe, it reveals the internal struggle between wanting to control and keep other people for ourselves, and accepting that things must change.
