Krikelkrakel (2014)
Grad film
Directed by Mirjam Baker
Synopsis
Krikelkrakel is an experimental , abstract work and shows an expressive compression of lines which induces a mesmerizing experience by overlays and mirrorings, acting both spatially and temporally . The film is silent so the effect of the image is enhanced. It is a digital, stereoscopic , 3D animation , and while it challenges visual perception , it is - due to the combination of traditional and contemporary techniques - as such also innovative in the sense of exploring new areas in animation in the field of digital drawing. I also thought that I could let disappear the look-and-feel of the digital by a thousandfold superposition of a very simple digital (digitally drawn ) stroke. That visual smoothness , which is recognized immediately as digital and which we know from CGI animations. As a result the outcome should feel organic . This has , I think , proven true : You can not automatically deduce to a purely digital origin. In other words, the more digital , the more one approaches the analog.
Director's Statement
I f the film is selected for your festival and if it can be shown in 3D please get in touch with me and I will send the second film file or a 3D-DCP in case you screen DCPs too. Remark about this film - I am aware that Krikelkrakel might be difficult to watch since it is completely abstract and then silent as well. Though I think it is very powerful watching it on a big screen, which I think it really needs, and being mesmerized by the image. I think it really draws the viewer into it and is a wonderful experience in a setting like a cinema. So I do hope it will be selected for your festival. About my recent work more in general - Since 2011 I have been experimenting extensively with abstract painting and drawing and found ways to suggest expressions of depth by means of tonality and variation of marks. By developing a way of working where I set the rule to not have a strict preconception of the painted image as a means for discoveries I came to find it very important to see creation happening with destruction. I took this painterly process into the filmic piece where the challenge was to apply my experiences in still painting to the potentials of 3D drawing. The use of CGI allowed me to not just suggest space by painterly means but work directly in digital space.
