Apophenia (2016)
Grad film
Directed by Prosper Unger-Hamilton
Synopsis
Apophenia means the perception of meaningful patterns in random data. Although this can be harmless, severe cases of it can signal the onset of schizophrenia: the perception of patterns - behaviour, messages and so on - that aren’t actually there. In this film we see how the pursuit of information can become an obsession, and how an individual’s way of seeing can become blurred with objective reality through means of a single cinematic viewpoint. When examined, Apophenia has no meaning other than that which you project onto it. Although Apophenia can be harmless, severe cases of it can signal the onset of schizophrenia. The perception of meaningful patterns in random data can become a dangerous obsession as an individual's way of seeing becomes blurred with objective reality
